I am excited to announce that new dates have been added for my Recital By Design seminar for dance studio owners and teachers. This four-hour seminar focuses on planning a short-themed recital, creating curriculum and lesson plans for children ages 3 to 8, and connecting classroom work to a clear performance goal. I designed this seminar for studios that want a recital plan that is simple, age-appropriate, and useful for both teachers and families. I also want the day to feel practical, creative, and easy to bring back into the studio. Host studios may also receive a commission when they bring this seminar to their facility and invite other like-minded teachers to attend who are not part of their faculty. Commission is based on attendee fees.
In this seminar, I begin by showing participants how to plan a short recital around one clear theme. For this session, the theme will be inspired by the music and storyline of Toy Story 5. We will look at how a familiar story idea can help young dancers understand character, movement, spacing, and performance, I refer to as CHOREOGRAPHY BY DESIGN. a backwards by design dance classroom concept. I will show how a recital theme can become more than costumes and music when it is planned from the classroom forward. My goal is to help teachers create a recital that feels organized before choreography even begins.
I will also teach participants how to create curriculum and lesson plans for children ages 3 to 8. These young dancers need structure, repetition, imagination, and movement goals that match their age and ability. I will explain how each class can build toward the final performance without making children feel rushed or overwhelmed. We will connect weekly lesson planning to skills such as listening, traveling, balancing, turning, using props, remembering patterns, and performing with confidence. I believe this is where recital planning becomes a true retention strategy for the studio.
During the seminar, participants will also work with music ideas, costume choices, props, formations, and simple choreography. One section is hands-on, requiring participants to construct a combination using five elements that should be taught in a jazz dance classroom working with other attendees, a collaborative effort. I encourage everyone attending to bring costume books, costume company links, or links to favorite costumes they may want to use. These materials will help us discuss how costumes can support a theme without controlling the entire recital plan. We will also look at how props and formations can help young children look successful on stage. I want teachers to leave with ideas they can actually use, not just notes they put away.
Recital By Design is for studio owners and teachers who want a better way to plan performances for their youngest students. New dates are now available, and each seminar is designed to be useful, focused, and easy to apply. The day includes practical planning, curriculum design, lesson-plan ideas, music discussion, costume thinking, and hands-on choreography for young dancers. Studios interested in hosting may ask about bringing the seminar to their own facility and receiving a host commission. I look forward to helping more studios design the recital, retain the family, and grow the studio.
